Aquastab is natural limestone mined locally in the Western Cape. Also known as Calcite or Calcium Carbonate, it is a natural way of elevating the pH and alkalinity of slightly acidic or soft water.
Most ground and surface water in the Western Cape is mildly corrosive to metals and or concrete and requires stabilization. Rainwater is also soft and therefore corrosive.
Mineral deficient water will naturally absorb minerals when in contact with limestone. Sufficient contact time is required for this process to happen. To achieve this, limestone is best installed into a reservoir in infusion bags or in a filter vessel on a recycle loop. Typically we recommend 25kg limestone per 500L of treated water storage capcity.
Aquastab is recommended for treating water with relatively low iron and manganese content and >6 pH. Alternative products and methods of stabilization should be used for more aggressive waters. Iron rich waters should first be treated through an iron removal filter. Alternatively, caustic lye or soda ash can be dosed prior to an iron removal system improve its performance and stabilize the water.
